The GreatPower Methodology

What is the GreatPower Methodology? Top

The heart of GreatPower Methodology Top

At it's heart, the GreatPower Methodology?is about successful problem analyzing and solving methodology. There are three central elements that define GreatPower Methodology:

  • An underlying set of philosophies and practices for successful problem analyzing and solving.

These philosophies, essential elements and core features are the foundation on which the GreatPower Methodology has been developed. GreatPower Methodology has a continuing history of ongoing evolution that has included the GreatPower approach, tool support and so forth.

  • A process model and associated content library.

Defined and improved on an ongoing basis by GreatPower, the GreatPower Methodology process model and associated content library defines the base GreatPower Methodology problem analyzing and solving process from which you can talor it and create your own problem analyzing and solving process.

  • The combination of the great ancestral wisdom and modern therory.

The basic theory comes from the "SHI-FA-SHU" model of Han Feizi, who was the famous ideologist in Qin Dynasty. He combined the Shen Zai's "SHI" theory, Shang Yang's "FA" theory and Shen Buhai's "SHU" theory into a "SHI-FA-SHU" triangle model. Now, we introduce the "YUAN" theory and dynamic mechanism, which makes the model more universal, useful, and powerful.

The essential elements of GreatPower Methodology Top

Just as above introduction, the GreatPower Methodology extends the "SHI-FA-SHU" triangle model of Han Feizi. Now it has been evolved into a unified, dynamic and useful methodology for problem analyzing and solving. The key elements of the GreatPower Methodology are:

  • SHI(势)  Top

"SHI" is the status of the current situation. Normally at the beginning of problem analysis, people will analyze the current related "SHI", for example, What are the goals? who are the stakeholder? Is there any constrain related? etc. Analyzing current "SHI" is the necessity for problem analyse and solving.

  • YUAN(源) Top

"YUAN" is the cause or the undergroud reason of the "SHI". Sometime, experienced people can generate solution only according "SHI" with their strong experience. But normally, it is not so easy to direct get "FA" from "SHI". There is a gap which we call "cause analysis", that is the procedure to find corresponding "YUAN". The typical example can be illustrated with Defect Prevention approach. Actually, there are a lot of defect prevention methods available, but which one is suitable for you, it depends on both "SHI" and "YUAN". If you do not have the measurement support or do not have enough data, Empirical Defect Prediction, Defect Discovery Profile, etc. can not help you. If you have, it's ok for you to find the "YUAN" of the defects, and so corresponding improvement methods can deployed accordingly.

  • FA(法) Top

"FA" means disciplines, rules, guidelines, methods, etc. some of "FA"s are nature, so that means not all the "FA" can be changed by people and we only have right to find, understand and utilize them. While others can be created, defined, consolidated and utilized for our purpose.

  • SHU(术) Top

"SHI" means "do". If we have "FA", but we never use them in real work to affect "SHI", nothing will happend. Only you do according to the corresponding "FA", the "SHI" will envolved into the new "SHI" in the next phase. Of cause you can check if the original "SHI" has been envolved accordingly.

The core features of GreatPower Methodology Top

As a unified, dynamic, and useful methodology, GreatPower Methodology has four key features:

Whom is GreatPower Methodology for? Top

If you depend on your ability to analyze and solve any problem which is critical to the success of your organization, then GreatPower Methodology will help you. And also you should know why and when you should use GreatPower Methodology.

Why should I use GreatPower Methodology? Top

GreatPower Methodology provides people with a unified methodology for problem analyzing and solving. The methodology:

  • allows user to analyze and solve problem in a unified platform.
  • provide a unified communication platform for problem analyzing and solving.

As a people who only cares about the normal problem in life, GreatPower Methodology provides you with an understanding of what can be expected from the analyzing effort. It provides a glossary of terminology and an encyclopedia of knowledge to help you communicate your needs effectively with other people who has the same problem.

As a business man, GreatPower Methodology provides you with a process by which you can communicate effectively with your staff, customer and manage your work accordingly.

When should I use GreatPower Methodology? Top

The GreatPower Methodology Platform

Since GreatPower Methodology is a unified methodology for problem analyzing and solving, it can be used for any type and any granularity  of problem you are facing. However, the way in which GreatPower Methodology is used needs to be varied appropriately to suit your needs ( tailorable ). There are two main considerations that will alter when and how you will use different parts of GreatPower Methodology:

  • problem granularity ( complexity of problem )
  • problem state (Shi) changing

How do I get started? Top

One of the core practices behind GreatPower Methodology is phastic evolution. This practice is also good to keep in mind as you start with GreatPower Methodology: don't try to undertand all the elements and features of GreatPower Methodology at once. Adopt an approach to learning and using GreatPower Methodology that is itself iterative and incremental. Start by analyzing your existing problem and selecting one or two key areas you would like to improve. Begin using GreatPower Methodology to improve these areas first and then, in later iterations or development cycles, make incremental improvements in other areas.
